UNDERGRADUATE HONORS PROGRAM

Program Overview

The Undergraduate Honors Program was established to encourage undergraduate students in their second year or above who have a strong interest in academic research to engage in advanced study and research in the field of Japanese language and literature at an early stage. Through rigorous, in-depth courses with high academic standards and demanding assessment, the program aims to cultivate innovative researchers with strong international competitiveness.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be second-year undergraduate students or above in the Department of Japanese Language and Literature (including double-major students). They must have a semester Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.7 or above and have completed at least two of the following required year-long departmental course sequences: “Intermediate Japanese (1 & 2)”, “Japanese Syntax (1 & 2)” , “Japanese Composition (Ⅱ) (1 & 2)”

Application Procedure

Applications must be submitted to the department office by October 31 each year. A completed application form and an official academic transcript must be included. Applicants who meet the eligibility requirements will be admitted to the program upon approval by the Director of the Honors Program.

Program Requirements

Students admitted to the Honors Program must select a faculty advisor by the second semester after joining the program. The advisor must be a full-time faculty member of the Department of Japanese Language and Literature.

Students are required to complete at least 12 credits of courses offered by the Department, as follows:

Course Category Required Credits Description
Graduate-Level Course 2 credits One graduate-level course offered by the Department.
Bachelor's Thesis 4 credits A bachelor's thesis supervised by the student's faculty advisor and offered by the Department.
Advanced Courses At least 6 credits Courses selected from the approved list of Advanced Courses for the Bachelor's Honors Program in Japanese Language and Literature. Revision: 2026.08.01

Academic Performance Requirements:

  • Throughout the Honors Program, students must maintain a semester Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.5 for all courses taken each semester.
  • The cumulative GPA for courses required by the Honors Program must be at least 3.7.

Program Completion Review

Students who have completed all Honors Program requirements, satisfied the academic performance requirements, and completed a Bachelor's Thesis may apply for the completion review during their graduating academic year by submitting an official academic transcript and their bachelor's thesis to the Honors Program Committee.

📅 Application Deadlines:
Fall Semester: Submit the application by the end of October. ;Spring Semester: Submit the application by the end of March.

Students who successfully pass the completion review will have the designation: “Undergraduate Honors Program in Japanese Language and Literature” recorded on their degree certificate, official academic transcript, and other relevant certification documents.
