FAQ

1. The Department of Foreign Language and Literature in NTU puts more emphasis on Western languages and literature comparing to us.

2. Mostly, in the departments of applied Japanese, practical uses of language are more emphasized, while academic and cultural aspects are less. In our department, we systematically arrange “basic courses” and “core courses” to help cultivate students’ literacy of Japanese language, deepen their knowledge of Japanese linguistics (Japanese education), and Japanese literature (culture), develop their ability in independent thinking, and furtherly broaden their understanding on Japan national condition. Through building up our students’ international perspectives, helping them become the talents that promote positive relationship between Japan and Taiwan is our final goal.

Students in other departments can choose Japanese I, II, and III as elective courses. Each course lasts for one school year. Considering that elective Japanese courses take three hours per week, as well as the loading that students might have from their own major courses, learning progress in our department’s courses and elective courses are different. Students who have finished Japanese II are still under the level of the first grader in our department. In addition, there are numerous students who are willing to take these elective Japanese courses, and therefore they might face the problem that some of them are not able to get the endorsement.

After finishing the courses in first grade, you may reach JLPT N3 level. Furthermore, you may reach N1 level after finishing the courses in second grade. Therefore, our department implements JLPT N1 mock tests to the third-grade students, helping them enhance their Japanese ability.

Since academic year 2002, Students who have passed JLPT N1 level before admission can submit application of exemption on Basic Japanese courses within 2 weeks after school starts. However, they still need to earn extra 8 credits from elective courses.
