Summary
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (CEFR), published in 2001, provides a detailed grading of foreign language proficiency indicators and a clear reference for learning objectives and assessment frameworks. In recent years, not only the European and American foreign language, but also Japanese language education has taken this framework of language proficiency into consideration in curriculum design, assessment methods, and materials development.

In Taiwan, both the curriculum design and the content of teaching materials have long been oriented toward grammatical sentence patterns, and teachers and learners have often used "having learned the ~~ sentence patterns in lesson ~~" as a criterion for judging proficiency or learning effectiveness. However, in this context, it is difficult to clearly indicate the actual application of learners' abilities in the learning process, and it is impossible to maintain the consistency in the learning stages.

The International Communication Foundation published the JF Standard in 2010 with reference to the CEFR standards, detailing the correlation between language proficiency and language activities, and proposing the JF Can-do concept based on a six-level proficiency grading framework, which clearly indicates the importance of "topic-attempting ability". This workshop will introduce the teaching activities and assessment methods designed by Can-do in foreign language courses, using the example of Japanese language teaching and English language teaching in Taiwan universities. Furthermore, this workshop will also give the opportunity for participants to think about how to improve the Japanese Education in Taiwan in this current situation through the group working activities. By doing so, we hope the design of teaching activities and assessments can integrate with the International Language Criterion.
